Mahar is more like a digital entertainment provider, offering films, TV programs and even Dhamma services to Myanmar viewers – providing subscribers have an internet connection. Whilst international streaming services like Hulu and Netflix have gained market share in Myanmar over the past 10 years, so too have regionally-focused services like Mahar. Skipping past the obligatory military propaganda messages, the youngest member of the family would be assigned to change the disc mid-way through the movie.īut as more and more local movies are uploaded and shared online, through websites like YouTube, the VCD-DVD rental store has been in terminal decline. In a typical family home, different generations would gather around the television to watch a rental VCD. In these shops the sounds of “I ordered it first”, and “please return it as soon as possible” can be heard, as customers fight over the best films to watch for the weekend. In suburban locations, video shops rented out their VCDs – much like the Blockbuster Video franchises overseas, only without the computer databases, bar code scanners and ice creams. The VCD packages themselves were never more than K1000, and would be sold alongside foreign-produced nature documentaries, crime thrillers, comedies and even overseas-produced pornography. Some street vendors had arrangements with their customers, allowing them to lease videos at a lower fee.
